How to Use Alibris to Find Public Domain Books

The very best way to be sure the materials you are using are truly public domain
is to go right to the original published book. But finding an original source
book can be quite difficult. Alibris makes it much easier.

What is Alibris?

In their own words:

“Alibris connects people who love books, music and movies to thousands of
independent sellers around the world. Our proprietary technology and advanced
logistics allow us to offer over 30 million used, new and hard-to-find titles to
consumers, libraries and other institutions.”

Basically if you know Amazon, you understand Alibris. The crucial difference is
that Alibris allows you to do searches based on publication date and that makes
it very valuable indeed.

How to search.

To start a search, you want to go to the Advanced Search page. Just to to
alibris.com and click on their advanced search button right where it says books.
It is located right below the basic search in the left hand corner of the home
page.

This brings you to a page with many input options. In addition to the standard
title, keyword, etc. inputs is one very valuable input near the bottom of the
form. It is called Publication Year – and one of its options is labeled Before.
And that is very powerful.

Lets say you were looking for a book on baseball that was in the public domain.
Put the word baseball in the title and in the publication date/before field put
1923.

This particular research pulled up over 200 possible books that you have the
opportunity to purchase and turn into a product.

A word of warning

The search results are only as good as the data input by the sellers. This means
that a certain percentage of books will not match your search terms and a
certain number of dates will be wrong – specifically I see lots of books with a
publication date of 1900 which is clearly wrong. (I’m guessing that 1900 is the
default if no date is entered.)

Therefore, before purchasing a book, it is generally a good idea to send a note
to the particular seller to verify the publication date before investing money
in the book.

While I would much prefer seeing the book before making a purchase to verify
that it meets my needs, if the price is reasonable enough, I figure it is just
part of the cost of researching for the product.

Oh, and this is also a good way to search for available books published after
1922 that are in the public domain. For instance if you are looking at doing a
diet related product, you could search for books say before 1960 and then when
you find books with interesting titles, you can then do a copyright search as
discussed in another article on this site (link at end) to see if the book fell
into the public domain. And who knows, this could result in finding a diamond in
the rough. In fact, at least for diet books, there have been several bestsellers
in recent years based on either a public domain book or a government
publication.

Good luck with your searching.

steps to use the public domain effectively.

1. The U.S. public domain holds an array of films on space program, news clips,

you can download them for free.

2. Most of the digitized versions are of a high quality and can be quickly

7 Ways to Make Money With Public Domain Maps

Public domain maps are a really great source of material for making money.

The first thought that enters everyone’s mind when thinking maps is just
reprinting them in a variety of formats and selling them as reproductions. This
is a very good way to earn an income from public domain maps. Prices you can
charge vary based on type of paper being used and the size of the reproduction.
Wide format reprints printed on archival papers or canvas can get as much as
$100 or more at a reproduction cost of $20-$30 depending on materials and size
of the print.

But reprinting maps is only one way that you can earn money in this lucrative
field.

Aside from the standard idea of making prints or wide format prints of maps,
there are many other great ways to earn an income from public domain maps.

1) You could print postcards of maps or particular scenes in maps. Many of the
old maps are beautiful and have many fascinating scenes contained within them
that would make excellent postcards or postcard sets. As an idea, you could make
a postcard set of a popular tourist town, get them professionally printed and
sell them to all the gift shops in that town.

2) You could make mousepads of maps. And with a service like cafepress
(http://www.cafepress.com), you can completely automate the manufacturing and
delivery. Lots of history buffs would love having an old map of their home town
or of the Civil War or of any other notable period of history they fancy.

3) You could create compilations of related maps on a CD or DVD. Make
collections of civil war maps, town maps for a particular state old gold mining
maps, etc.

4) You could compile a collection of maps with descriptions into a book (and
again use a service like cafepress to produce them on demand.) If you’ve been in
a bookstore, you will see these collections selling at a very good price.
Popular topics for map books include war strategy maps and early exploration
maps.

5) You could use the maps to build a variety of interesting screensavers. There
are many free or low cost screensaver programs available to help you build your
custom screensavers. You can sell the screensavers of offer them for a free
download in return for building a mailing list or introducing people to your
website.

6) If you are ambitious, you could use something like the old panoramic maps at
the Library of Congress to build advertising pieces – like restaurant placements
- for the towns that are represented in the collection. The map would be in the
center with the ads around the edge.

7) You could produce any type of hardgood – mugs, t-shirts, etc. with map
images. Cafepress offers a variety of items that you can print on. They even let
you build your very own store where customers can shop. They do all the back
office work and you collect a check based on your sales. So with Cafepress, you
could build your very own map t-shirt and mug store if you wanted.

That is certainly enough ideas to help get your creative juices revved up to the
non traditional possibilities of public domain map revenue opportunities.

One of the best sources of public domain maps is the Library of Congress:

A Little Secret About Public Domain Treasures

I bet this little secret is going to get YOU excited… just like it did me. I
just discovered public domain treasures and it’s a perfect business opportunity
for many new internet entrepreneurs.

Did you know there’s a little known loophole in US law that allows anyone to
distribute, resell or give away expired copyrighted content? Officially, its
called public domain, and savvy marketers “borrow” it to publish instant
products.

Public domain refers to anything that is NOT protected under US copyright law.
This includes all works published before 1923 and under certain conditions,
works published up to 1978. A “work” can be anything, a book, movies, plays,
songs, photographs, instruction manuals, posters, courses, reports, etc. You
could take these works, repackage them and sell them for a profit. By tapping
into public domain content, all the nitty gritty work has been done for you.

There are almost an endless number of ways that you can make money with public
domain content. Let me suggest 10 different models you can use to activate and
tap the public domain treasures.

Model 1: Resell It.
You can re-publish public domain content exactly as it is. Whether it’s a book,
a movie or even music, you can take this content and quickly turn it into a
product. Just copy it as it is and start selling it.

Model 2: Website Content
You can take the text of the public domain work which relates to a product you
are selling or an affiliate program that you are promoting. You then create web
pages and include links back to your product page.

Model 3: Repackage
You can repackage a public domain work into a new product. You can use the
ideas and some of the content of public domain works to create new and better
products.

Eg. Walt Disney characters Snow White, the Little Mermaid were all stories from
the public domain.

Model 4: Multimedia
You can change the books in print into a CD or even a video set. Add to the
perceived value of the product by offering ways to consume the information. What
was once simply a “book” can now be a complete home study course or training
program.

Eg. The famous “Think & Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill has been made into an
audio CD which is a more convenient format.

Model 5: Reprint Rights
You could sell your version of the information product along with marketing
materials. People love reprint rights and it’s a quick and easy way to make tons
of money immediately. You can sell reprint rights only to a derivative product
you have created from the original public domain material.

Model 6: Upsell
You can use public domain works and use then as an “upsell” to a regular
version of your best selling product. You simply present your buyer with an
additional opportunity to “upgrade” their order or add something to their order.

Model 7: Bonuses
Simply use the work as a bonus to your main offering. People love bonuses and
will buy a product just for the bonus, if its unique and not something they’ve
seen all over the net already.

Model 8: Viral E-books
You simply take parts of the book and turn it into a viral e-book by allowing
others to pass along or even sell this e-book as their own. Once you trigger the
“virus” its nearly impossible to make it stop because people keep passing it on
and than these people keep passing it on etc, etc.

Eg. Rebecca fine from Seattle, WA used this exact technique to accidentally
launch her six figure business with an interesting book, written in 1910 “The
Science of Getting Rich” by Wallace D.Wattles. You can “super-size” this
strategy by creating a viral e-book with the material and then including
affiliate links that pay you commissions anytime someone buys from your
recommended resources.

Model 9: Google AdSense
You can use the material to create an information-rich website and then place a
tiny piece of code from Google to run their AdSense program on your site. You’ll
essentially partner-up with Google and get paid a percentage for everyone that
simply clicks on the ads Google places on your site.

Model 10: Articles/ Mini Courses
You could use little contents from public domain works and create a mini-course
that people would subscribe from your site. You just load a series of 4 to 10
articles into your auto-responders and it delivers it on a total auto-pilot.

You can also use the material into 500-800 word articles to distribute for free
publicity and traffic to your sites. Editors of e-zines and owners of web sites
are always looking for hot fresh content and in exchange they’ll send you over
targeted traffic.

Eg. Matt Furey discovered a little unknown book on “Catch Wrestling” and turned
it into a complete manual and video e-course of 12 lessons for his market of
fitness and wrestling buffs. He had earned over $1million dollars in sales from
this one book.

Among the topics available in the public domain treasures are:

Health & Fitness

Fun & Games

Sports & Recreation

Hobbies & Crafts

Education & Self Improvement

Food & Cooking

Animal & Pets

Home Garden & much much more.

Public domain works provides a huge opportunity to newbies in the internet world
to tap these vast treasures. Simply put, you can use these works to instantly
create e-books, manuals, articles, reports or any other type of information
products in a snap. GOOD LUCK!

marketing models as marketed by TOP internet Entrepreneurs at

Get Cooking With the Public Domain

Whether or not you actually like to cook, you can make a great deal of money by
revamping recipes and cookbooks you can freely access from the public domain.
There are several ways you can do this. We’ll go over a few of them here.

Ingredients are Free – That is, Ingredients are free from copyright in the first
place so whether or not they are in the public domain, you don’t have to worry
about copyright infringement by using the same set of ingredients that someone
else uses. But let’s say you do procure an old cookbook that is in the public
domain. You probably will have to change the ingredients somewhat, especially if
brand names that are no longer in existence are used. Also, pay attention to the
processes that are used and update them accordingly. Think about which, if any,
appliances, mixer, blender, microwave oven, etc, might need to be used that were
not mentioned in the original recipe. Also pay attention to the verbiage used in
the ingredients. For example, if the recipe calls for lard, you might substitute
vegetable oil or olive oil.

Make it Yours – Even if the cookbook or recipe is a part of the public domain,
infuse your own personality into it by recreating the list of instructions. You
can revamp a recipe in no time like this and add it to a blog or create an
e-book around a certain type of food or a certain way to cook. You can then add
affiliate links and promote products that go along with the recipes, which gives
you a virtually limitless list of products to promote.

Add Photographs – The cookbook or recipes you get from the public domain may or
may not come with photographs but you can certainly add your own. If you really
get into the whole cooking and marketing bit, you can test the recipes yourself,
take pictures, and post them all on your blog or website. If you’re just trying
to make a quick buck, you can certainly repackage old cookbooks but you probably
won’t do as well without adding the personal touch.

Recipes for Health – You don’t have to have a cooking or recipe blog or website
to make great use of recipes you get from the public domain. Many health and
fitness blogs and websites could be greatly enhanced with recipes that are good
for certain diseases and conditions. Diabetes, for example, is a condition that
is blog about and written about a lot online and if you have such a site, you
could certainly enhance it with recipes you get from the public domain, even if
they are not exactly diabetic to begin with. During the revamping process, you
can reinvent them to where they would be healthy for diabetics. You can try this
with a variety of health and fitness topics. Remember, the closer you are to
your subject, the better you are going to come across to your site visitors
because they are going to be able to tell that you are passionate about your
subject. That does not mean that you have to have diabetes or another condition
to promote healthful recipes but do take into consideration your personal
interests before starting such a project. Even if the love of your life is
chocolate, you can do this type of project and do it well so there is something
here for virtually everyone.

A Guide to the Best Free Fantasy Books in the Public Domain

The genre of fantasy has a long history and one of the benefits of this is that
there are now lots of great fantasy books available in the public domain. Here
is a guide to some of these books both famous and not so famous.

William Morris is generally attributed with creating the modern genre of the
epic fantasy quest and Tolkien himself gives a lot of credit to Morris as an
inspiration for his own writing. The story idea of a Morris novel will be
familiar to you. It is of a young man who is thrown into a grand adventure to
save the world. In the adventure he must travel across strange and wonderful
lands while battling strange and magical creatures. His two most famous works
are The Well at the World’s End and The Wood Beyond the World. Both of these
books are freely available at Gutenburg.org.

Edith Nesbit is the creator of the modern fantasy novel for children. The theme
of her work usually is about several children in modern life who get
inexplicably thrown into the mystery, intrigue and wonder of a magical other
world. This is a theme that has been wonderfully expanded on my C.S. Lewis in
his Narnia novels. She published about 40 novels in the genre of children’s
fantasy and her best known works are The Story of the Treasure Seekers and Five
Children and It
(Which has been made into a motion picture).

Edgar Rice Burroughs is another author from the turn of the century who wrote an
enormous amount of varying materials in the fantasy and science fiction genres.
Some of his more popular works include the Tarzan series and The Gods of Mars
series. The Gods of Mars series is eleven volumes long and the first volume is
The Princess of Mars
. Of particular note to the fan of fantasy are his
Pellucidar novels. All of these works are freely available at Gutenburg.org.

There are many famous works of fantasy that are now in the public domain and if
you are looking for a familiar work you may want to consider the works of Lewis
Carroll or Hans Christian Andersen. Some other classic favorites would be
Aesop’s fables
or The Book of a Thousand Nights and a Night translated by Sir
Richard Francis Burton.

There are lots of great Fantasy books for children, teens and adults freely
available in the public domain and all of the books and authors I have listed
here in this article can be found at gutenburg.org. If you love fantasy and want
to delve into it without digging into your wallet these are some great choices.

How to Make Thousands of Dollars on eBay Selling Public Domain Products

Make thousands of dollars on eBay selling public domain products on eBay. In
this article we are going to look at a simple strategy that has been used by
many powersellers to make lots of money quickly and easily on eBay.

There’s something called the public domain which contains books, music, movies
and other great products that you can take and sell as your own all over eBay
and the internet. I personally know several marketers who make thousands of
dollars a week selling public domain products on eBay.

The biggest problem with works in the public domain is not a lot of people know
where to find good products. Luckily in my course I give you the actual url’s
where you can find these products right now.

The power of this is enormous. If you can get your hands on lots of quality
information type products the world is yours. There are thousands of buyers
looking for old and rare books, music and movies every week on eBay.

One good public domain book can literally pay your mortgage, all you have to do
is scan the book on your printer and turn it into a pdf, burn it to a cd and
list it on eBay. I know one person for instance who took a public domain image
and got it printed up as a poster, guess what he has made thousands of dollars
from this one image.

One of the best ways to make money from public domain works is to slightly alter
them, if it’s a book change the font to verdana, add some images or add some new
text and you have a brand new unique product to make money from on eBay.

There is an unlimited amount of dollars to be made from the public domain you
just have to know where to look and what to do with the information you gather,
luckily in my course I reveal the exact blueprint you need to make money from
this great resource.

Free Clip Art and Free Graphics May Cost Too Much

Creating a good website on a budget is hard, and one of the toughest assignments
is the creation of attractive, appropriate images. Many webmasters rely heavily
clip art and stock graphics to get the job done, even accomplished artists.
There are thousands of sites with such art available but they are a potential
legal and ethical minefield, because you are usually required to compensate the
artists when you use them on a commercial site. Sometimes it’s not just once,
either. One popular stock photography site requires royalty payments each
quarter for the pictures you use. Payments for a single picture can run into the
hundreds of dollars.

What makes this article different is that the free clip art and stock graphics
mentioned here are all not only free to acquire, but they are also royalty-free
and rights-cleared, meaning you can use them on your site without having to pay
anyone. And the catch? Originally, it was going to be that these images are of
somewhat lower quality than their commercial counterparts. Reviewing these sites
proved otherwise. There’s a ton of great stuff here. About the only catch is
that in most cases you are not allowed to copy the entire collection and
republish it as your own. Feel free to use as many of these free clip art images
as you want on web pages you have designed, however.

PDClipArt.org

Browse PDClipart.org during your downtime and you’ll find some real gems. It is
a comprehensive and well-categorized site that verges perilously close to
commercial quality. I have used some of the image credits to track down artists
for additional work. Webmaster Jon Sullivan has contributed thousands of his own
pictures to the public domain in an act of extreme generosity. His category
system is faultless and thorough. PD Photo is clean and very easy to navigate.
Travel, events such as airshows and parades, and such critically important
topics as cheese are covered with commercial grade photographs. A few of them
are copyrighted, apparently because they use copyrighted subject matter, but he
still makes them free to use; see the Copyrighted section for details.

Peirce Free Clipart Collection

Surprisingly high quality free clip art collection and, pleasantly, most images
are in at least three formats: web-ready bitmaps, PDF, and WMF (a Windows
graphic format). Do note the unusual spelling of Peirce. It’s not a typo.

WPClipArt.com

A massive 25,000 free clip art collection of public domain images “specifically

retouching and improving many of the images while still not claiming copyright
on his changes. Emphasis is on older but eminently useful images.

There’s more where this came from. Read Working Webmaster’s free special report

Many sites advertising free clip art, free images, and
royalty-free images are not free to use at all. If they
aren’t spam sites or low-quality clip art designed to
advertise a commercial package, they sometimes come with
onerous royalty arrangements requiring quarterly payments to
the rights owners. We did extensive Web research to locate
sources of free clip art and photographs that commercial
sites can use without fear of copyright reprisal.

Boost Your Profits by Using Music From the Public Domain

At first glance, you may not think you would benefit from using music from the
public domain or from any source for your Internet marketing needs but let’s
explore a few ways you can profit from using this free resource. After all, you
became an Internet marketer to make money right? Making a profit from something
you get absolutely free is one of the smartest ways there is to make money so
read on to discover how you can boost your income from using music you can get
absolutely free!

Use Music in Your Videos – Many Internet marketers have learned how valuable it
is to include video as part of their overall Internet marketing campaigns. While
not every video endeavor will need music to accommodate it, you can choose from
a wide variety of free music to accompany many of your videos. For example, you
may have a series of pictures you are stringing together to make a video to
advertise one of your projects, maybe an e-book or a special report. How much
more valuable would that clip be with just the right music added to it? Add the
fact that you won’t have to pay for the music and you have a winning
combination.

Use Public Domain Music for Sound Effects – Did you know you can find sound
effect recordings in the public domain that you can freely use? Not everyone
realized this and some Internet marketers pay for expensive services to create
sound effects they probably could have gotten free had they known where to get
them. All you have to do is conduct an Internet search for public domain music
and you will be presented with a plethora of websites that will direct you to
the right sources for music files. While it is up to you to verify that these
files are indeed in the public domain, doing so is relatively easy also.

Free Music May not be in the Public Domain – It’s important to realize whether
or not the clips, songs, or other music related material you are using is truly
from the public domain, which means there are no restrictions whatsoever on how
you use the material or if you are using material that has certain licenses you
must abide by. For example, you can download free music sound effects and clips
from Freesound, but you must cite the source. In addition, since each country
has its own laws regarding public domain, you will have to abide by the laws of
the country in which the public domain music or clip originated.

Public Domain Sheet Music – There is a wide variety of free public domain sheet
music that you can readily find online. Internet marketers with musical talent
can profit by taking the free sheet music and coming up with their own
compositions, which they can then copyright and sell via digital download, on
CD, or both. There is no limit what you can do with public domain material,
including music, to further your Internet marketing enterprise.
