Creating Your Products From Public Domain Content

One of the easiest things to do with public domain material is to simply make a
collection of works. It is best to deal with works that are short, such as poems
and short stories. There are several directions that you can go with this. I
will give you a few suggestions here. Mind you, these are not the be all and end
all. They are just a few of the many things you can do.

The first thing is to go with the most popular public domain poet or author that
you can find. Take their most famous works, probably about 8 to 12, and put them
into a book. Will there be other books out there with these collections?
Probably, but at least you know there will be a demand for them. To get your
share of the pie, simply use the advertising methods I’ve outlined in previous
articles and get the word out. You’ll make your share of sales with hard work.

Another route you can go is to take the same famous author and find their lesser
known works. Then, publish a book with a title something like ‘The Unknown Works
of’ or ‘The Little Known Works of’ This is certainly to draw some interest from
fans of the author who aren’t familiar with these works.

Some people take a totally different direction. They look for works from a
relatively unknown author. The first thing they do though is to read these works
to see if they are any good. If they find a gold mine, they publish these works
using a title something like ‘The Literary Genius of the Unknown’ The people you
are going to attract with this kind of book are avid readers who are constantly
looking for old authors that nobody has ever heard of. Believe me, they exist,
the authors and the people looking for them.

Now, the above is a small market because there aren’t that many of these people.
But, there is also almost no competition either. This is kind of like long tail
keyword promotion where you find a niche where very few people are doing
searches each month combined with a very few number of competing sites coming up
in the search. In the case of public domain works, this competition will be even
less. Why? The same reason why you took a look at this topic and said to
yourself, ‘Why would anybody care?’ Well, if you just type the words ‘public
domain’ into a Google search engine, you will find over 62 million sites. If
there is that much info out there on public domain, then somebody has got to be
interested in this stuff, otherwise a lot of people are wasting a lot of time.

The things that you can do with public domain works are limited only by your
imagination. The point is, there are a ton of works out there that you don’t
have to do much with in order to make an income from them. You just have to find
the time to put in the legwork to first find the work, and then decide what it
is you want to do with it.

And again, for those of you who think there is no money in stuff that is almost
100 years old, take a look at what Walt Disney did and what Ted Turner just
recently did with all those public domain movies.

The money is there to be had. You just have to go out and get it.

Top 2 Mistakes of Using Public Domain Works in E-books to Make Money Online

For those of us who are non lawyers, finding out whether a work is in the public
domain can be quite complicated. Get the help of a lawyer friend if you have, or
search the internet for easy steps to determine the status of a work. If the
work is determined to be for public use, you can do pretty much what you want
with it.

So the first mistake is not checking properly if the work is really of public
domain. If the work is really in the public domain, you can use the work as you
deem fit without informing the author. If you change and edit the work, you can
claim the works with you as the author.

So what can you do with public domain works? You can use the entire work, or
just use a certain part of the work. You can digitize old books to sell as
e-books, and you can also explore other formats of public domain works such as
film, audio or photos.

The second mistake comes after you have substantially edited, updated and
improved on the original material. You can and need to copyright it! For
example, even if you extract different parts of photos or written material from
20 different works that you can legally use, you can still copyright it and put
your name as the author!

So here are the top 2 mistakes that most people make when using public domain
works in e-books or other information products to make money online. To explain
the whole legal process of checking whether the work is really legally possible
for you use or edit and call your own or not will take a much longer article to
explain, so do consult your lawyer friends or search the internet for more in
depth information on it.

The whole internet marketing game takes time to master, so learn from those who
have been there to shorten your learning time, and avoid painful mistakes.

7 Ways to Make Money With Public Domain Maps

<p>Public domain maps are a really great source of material for making money.

The first thought that enters everyone’s mind when thinking maps is just
reprinting them in a variety of formats and selling them as reproductions. This
is a very good way to earn an income from public domain maps. Prices you can
charge vary based on type of paper being used and the size of the reproduction.
Wide format reprints printed on archival papers or canvas can get as much as
$100 or more at a reproduction cost of $20-$30 depending on materials and size
of the print.

But reprinting maps is only one way that you can earn money in this lucrative
field.

Aside from the standard idea of making prints or wide format prints of maps,
there are many other great ways to earn an income from public domain maps.

1) You could print postcards of maps or particular scenes in maps. Many of the
old maps are beautiful and have many fascinating scenes contained within them
that would make excellent postcards or postcard sets. As an idea, you could make
a postcard set of a popular tourist town, get them professionally printed and
sell them to all the gift shops in that town.

2) You could make mousepads of maps. And with a service like cafepress
(http://www.cafepress.com), you can completely automate the manufacturing and
delivery. Lots of history buffs would love having an old map of their home town
or of the Civil War or of any other notable period of history they fancy.

3) You could create compilations of related maps on a CD or DVD. Make
collections of civil war maps, town maps for a particular state old gold mining
maps, etc.

4) You could compile a collection of maps with descriptions into a book (and
again use a service like cafepress to produce them on demand.) If you’ve been in
a bookstore, you will see these collections selling at a very good price.
Popular topics for map books include war strategy maps and early exploration
maps.

5) You could use the maps to build a variety of interesting screensavers. There
are many free or low cost screensaver programs available to help you build your
custom screensavers. You can sell the screensavers of offer them for a free
download in return for building a mailing list or introducing people to your
website.

6) If you are ambitious, you could use something like the old panoramic maps at
the Library of Congress to build advertising pieces – like restaurant placements
- for the towns that are represented in the collection. The map would be in the
center with the ads around the edge.

7) You could produce any type of hardgood – mugs, t-shirts, etc. with map
images. Cafepress offers a variety of items that you can print on. They even let
you build your very own store where customers can shop. They do all the back
office work and you collect a check based on your sales. So with Cafepress, you
could build your very own map t-shirt and mug store if you wanted.

That is certainly enough ideas to help get your creative juices revved up to the
non traditional possibilities of public domain map revenue opportunities.

Create Your Own Public Domain Bookmark Lists

One of the biggest challenges of working with the public domain is finding the
exact materials you want to use.

With the exception of some megasites, digitized public domain materials are
literally scattered in thousands of places on the web. That means that you will
often find yourself spending hours with your favorite search engine digging up
nuggets you can use for your latest project. It also means that you are going
to stumble across many sources of material that aren’t what you are looking
for.

When I search, I’ll generally stumble across 20 or more public domain
repositories before finding exactly what I want.

Now if I’m in a rush, I just keep moving on until I fund exactly what I’m
looking for and them move forward on the project. But when I have a bit of
extra time, I start adding these sites to my list of public domain bookmarks so
I will have them available to me at a later date for future projects.

Your web browser’s favorites folder is the perfect place for all these
resources. With just a few clicks, you can add another resource to your growing
list of personal public domain bookmarks. There are a few keys you must follow
to mazimize the use of your browser’s favorites function however.

  • Organization is the first key. Create a folder called something like “public
domain links.” Below that folder, create additional folders as needed to help
organize your links into categories. For instance, you might have a section
devoted to sheet music, another section devoted to mythology books, another to
Civil War images and so on. You can even create subfolders of these folders to
    really drill down the categories.

  • Good descriptions is the second key. You can personally label each bookmark so
you know what it is about later. By writing your own description about the
contents of the link, the next time you need resources for category X, you
just scan the bookmarks you have for that category and go right to the
resources. That means no more time invested in searching (unless of course you
need to find more materials – which you can again add to your growing bookmark
    list.)

By taking a bit of extra time when doing your public domain searches to create
a useful and usable list of bookmarks, your product development based on public
domain materials will become more and more efficient. So take the time on your
next search to being creating your very own bookmark list.

Marketing Info in the Public Domain

Want To Create Extra Streams Of Income? Try Marketing Information In The Public
Domain

Are you having problems financing your invention?

Do you need a powerful but inexpensive “give-away” to help convince people to
sign-up for your free on-line newsletter or your next fee-based teleforum?

Do you need information for your book or audio tape which you can quickly access
and drop in as a special chapter or section without spending any money — or
doing any work?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you will find the rich
resources you need in the public domain. (See previous article for detailed
discussion on the public domain.) And, because this information is absolutely
free to use however you see fit, you not only can access it at no cost, you can
also repackage it, market it and create a stream of income to help finance your
other projects or to simply add to your bottom line.

While books in the public domain are the most common resource used for this type
of marketing, don’t overlook music, photographs, government documents, film
clips, old movies and the like.

To get you started, here are 5 key marketing strategies for converting
information in the public domain into profitable information products:

1. Spot A Trend, Find “How-To” Information On The Topic & Create An E-book.
People are always looking for solutions to problems. Let’s take an example: You
begin reading news articles about the popularity of the King Charles Terrier
among Baby Boomers. Of course, this is no surprise to you: You adopted one of
these adorable dogs a few months ago. Then you spot a few more of these puppies
in your neighborhood. Suddenly, you realize that all these new owners must be
wondering how to housebreak their new pets. So, you do a bit a research in the
public domain, find several resources and compile your new e-book, How To Turn
Your King Charles Terrier Into The Perfect Pet: Learn My 5 Secrets To Quick,
Effective House Training. Of course, you personalize your book with stories
about how you used these principles to house train your own “best friend.”

Whatever topic you choose for your public domain information product, always
remember to define a target market first. Then, select a topic from the top “how
to” e-book subjects: money, health, leisure/travel, saving time, pets, diet,
cooking, health, time management and relationships. Next research the popularity
of your choice by checking internet key words. Finally, begin your marketing
campaign.

2. Turn Your “How To” E-book Into An Audio Product. In today’s hectic
environment, people who won’t make time to read will often take time to listen
to an audio tape or CD while driving to and from work. Whether you create an
audio book by simply reading and recording it “as is” or by modifying it to fit
into your own work, the conversion to a tape or CD increases the works perceived
and real value. While most e-books sell for between $19 and $39, audio products
are usually priced between $69 and $99.

3. Create CDs, Picture Books Or Videos From Public Domain Recordings.
Researching and creating these types of products can be more complex and a bit
more risky to market, so you may want to try this after you’ve successfully
produced a few “how to” products. They key to your success in this area is
selecting one or two very well-defined niche markets. For example, a product
highlighting films of 20th Century Inventions is most likely to appeal to
inventors and educators (two large niche markets).

4. Convert Government Booklets & Information Into “How to” Products. The
vast majority of United States government publications and website information
is in the public domain. A particularly wealthy source of “how to” information
is available through the Small Business Association (SBA) on topics like: how to
start a small business; how to start a restaurant; how to get business
financing; how to make your hobby pay; tax advantages of a home-based business;
and how to own and operate a bed and breakfast. And, remember: these topics only
scratch of the surface of government resources available for your use.

5. Give Away A Public Domain Work As An Incentive. Want someone to subscribe to
your e-newsletter? Offer them a free e-book on a topic related to the subject
of your newsletter. Want someone to purchase your public domain e-book? Offer
them a free 5-day e-course providing a few key highlights from the book, then
invite them to purchase the book to learn more. Not every way you use material
from the public domain must be related to the internet. For example, if you do
any amount of public speaking, offering a free public domain product after you
speak is an excellent way to draw people to your “back-of-the-room” table where
you also have books and audio products for sale.

Public domain can make you millions

The opportunity is huge for making money with products available in the public
domain which is the main reason I’ve put together this expanded section for you
to learn from.

Where is public domain content available? There are literally millions of
creative works-books, music, music scores, films, photographs, artwork, images,
and much more-that exist in the public domain. But if they’re so public, why are
they hiding?

The short answer is: they aren’t. There are a multitude of well-known works that
people don’t realize are now considered public property. From classic literature
to non-fiction works on a wide variety of topics; silent films, classic movies,
vintage cartoons and beloved songs; even some instantly recognizable artwork and
images can be found in the public domain.

Below you will find several methods of finding public domain work that you can
use in any way you like to start making money.

Internet Searches

Where would we be these days without the Internet? There are literally millions
of resources on the world wide web, available for anyone with the knowledge and
patience to find them.

Search engines are a good place to start. Though Google remains the most popular
and effective, not every site is listed on the search titan. Try running the
same search on multiple engines: AltaVista, Dogpile, Yahoo, and MSN Search are
just a few of the many options out there. (And if you really want to start out
big, you can run a search for search engines first, then check each one in
turn.)

Here are a few examples:

* public domain work examples

* list of free public domain work

* free public domain books

* public domain web site

A note of caution: don’t trust everything you read on the internet. Always find
out where the web site owner got the information (for example, you can probably
trust data from the Library of Congress, but not from “my next door neighbor
Bubba who runs a successful business out of the trunk of his car.”). Generally,
if the same title shows up in multiple searches, it’s probably public domain.

You can also find forums, message boards and e-groups dedicated to public domain
news and discussions. Check Internet directories or do a search for “public
domain forum” (also: substitute group, list, board, news, or community for
“forum”) and you’ll discover more information than you will need. Be sure to
visit groups, lists and forums before joining-read through some of the posted
messages and member profiles to determine whether the other people involved seem
easy to talk with and open to new members with lots of questions. The Internet
community is often a wonderfully supportive place to find people with similar
interests, and most are willing to share the experiences they’ve gained.

A few of the many public domain resource sites available:

Classic Book Library: A free online library featuring literary and genre novels
in the public domain, from authors such as Jules Verne, L. M. Montgomery, and
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Viewable chapter by chapter in HTML.

Project Gutenberg: An enormous collection of novels, non-fiction books and other
written work in the public domain, all available free in downloadable e-book
format.

RetroFilm.com: Provides a catalogue of public domain movies, television shows,
cartoons, musicals, documentaries and more. The site serves television broadcast
companies and does not provide copies of film footage for individuals, but it is
a great place to find titles which you can then track down a copy of elsewhere.

Public Domain Report: The site of a monthly newsletter that reveals significant
works as they enter the public domain. Each issue features selections and
samples from a variety of mediums-at least one new book, film, play, song,
image, and children’s work are included every month, from well-known authors,
artists and creators like Dorothy Parker and George Gershwin. A one-year
subscription will set you back $395, but for those who don’t have the time or
inclination to do extensive research themselves, it is an excellent source of
fresh material.

Public Libraries

Libraries are an excellent-and free-resource for finding public domain material.
Pick a subject that interests you and scan the shelves for older books relating
to the topic, or spend an afternoon browsing through the card catalogue. Most of
the time, the publication date is right near the beginning of the listing on the
card, so identifying works published before 1923 is a simple matter.

Most librarians are quite knowledgeable about their library’s collections and
are happy to help you find exactly what you’re looking for. If you’re planning a
visit to the library, it’s advantageous to make up a list of questions regarding
the object of your search and approach the librarian before you do anything
else, particularly if you are going to a small local library. Larger state-run
library and university library staff members may not have the time or resources
to devote personal attention to every patron.

The Public Domain and the Amazon Pro Merchant Account

If you are creating your own public domain based information products, you need
to give consideration to selling your products on Amazon.

As a product creator, there are two ways to do this. The first is Amazon
Advantage. The second is as a Pro Merchant. Let’s look at both programs.

Amazon Advantage – When you are an Amazon Advantage seller, you are essentially
selling your inventory to Amazon at a wholesale price of 45% of the retail price
of the product. The advantages of this program are that you ship to only one
customer – Amazon – and you have a great deal of control over how your product
description looks. The disadvantage is that they take a large percentage of the
product cost. So if you are selling low priced goods, this method of selling on
Amazon can take a large part of your profit per sale.

Pro Merchant – A Pro Merchant is a great option if you are constantly creating
products and use Amazon as a sales channel. A Pro Merchant account costs $39.99
a month but offers some great advantages over their free seller account. It
gives you a lower fee structure, the ability to offer products without the
listings expiring and the ability to create your own product listings in the
Amazon catalog.

Let’s look at each of these in a bit more detail.

  • Lower fee structure – As a regular marketplace seller, you are changed a
percentage of the sale (varies based on product category) plus a $0.99 charge
per item sold. As a Pro Merchant, that $0.99 per item charge is waived. So if
you are selling more than 40 items on Amazon every month, your subscription is
    paid for.
  • Non Expiring Listings – As a regular marketplace seller, your listings expire
after 60 days. That means you have to constantly keep relisting items that
didn’t sell. As a Pro Merchant, the listings are kept up forever. As a product
developer, that means you can create a listing with an inventory level of 100,
500, 1000 or more and just let the listing sit in their available products list
forever. So you list it once and never touch it again. This is a great time
saver as you never have to worry about if your product is still listed.
  • Ability to create your own catalog entries – Amazon is driven off a catalog of
products. If your specific product is not in the catalog, you cannot sell it as
a regular marketplace seller. As a Pro Merchant, you can create a catalog entry
for your item and then begin selling it. For example, we have over 450 CD and
DVD products that we created from public domain materials and each of them is a
catalog entry we created. That means the description of the product, the images,
the price point, etc. are all what we set it at. And when we sell, we just tell
Amazon that we have copies of that particular catalog item and are offering them
    at $X.

The only drawback is that the formatting available to a Pro Merchant created
listing is limited. They allow you 2000 characters to create your product
description. This is OK. The negative part is that it is all one big paragraph
which at times can make it less readable to the potential buyer.

If you are serious about creating hardgood products (books, CDs, DVDs) from
public domain materials, you really need to take a look at the Amazon Pro
Merchant account as a profitable sales channel for you.

Public Domain Movies

You may not plan on becoming a famous movie director, but you still have a use
for public domain movies, broadcasts, commercials, and sound bites. These can be
used on websites, or to create CD’s or DVD’s that you can sell.

By far, Buyout Footage at http://www.buyoutfootage.com/pages/pd.html is one of
the hottest places to obtain movies. There is also great film that you can use
at http://www.archive.org/details/prelinger and also at The Library of Congress
at http://www.loc.gov/rr/mopic/.

At the Live Music Archive at Archive.org, which is located at
http://www.archive.org/details/etree you can find movies of live music shows.
You can also find free footage at the UCLA Film and Television Archive which is
located at http://cinema.library.ucla.edu/.

While these are excellent sources for finding public domain movies, it is
important to realize that you must purchase the work from most of these sources,
with the exception of the public domain works found at Archive.org. However, the
fee may be well worth it depending on what you intend to do with the film that
you want.

There are various ways that you can use old film, broadcasts, and commercials
for financial gain. You may want to use the entire work, or just use parts of it
for your product. You could even make a collection of old commercials for an
informative marketing course!

Again, you need to be aware of the format that the movie you want is delivered
in, and make sure that you have the appropriate software or equipment to
manipulate the movie to turn it into the product that you want it to be, if
editing it is what you have in mind, or to transfer it to the medium that you
want it to be on if you just want to change the delivery format. For instance,
you may want to change something that is on video tape to DVD.

This information on public domain movies has been published for the benefit of
all ‘classics’ seekers.

How To Make Money Selling Domain Names

Selling domain names can be quite profitable for webmasters, but also for everyone who is interested in this business.

This is particularly the case if you sells a domain name that has an existing line of traffic. In these situations domain names can generate thousands of dollars for their webmasters. There have even been domain name names that allowed webmasters to collect millions in profit. With a little bit of basic knowledge, you can emulate such success for yourself. This article will provide that information through an easy to follow step-by-step guide.

First, you will need to find a search engine keyword that is highly searched yet not used too much by other websites. You can do this by using a keyword analyzer. The best keyword analyzers are those that you pay for, such as Word Tracker or Keyword Analyzer. The reason why these are preferable over free ones is because they let you know how much competition you are facing with a potential keyword. Free ones only tell you how much the keyword has been searched. If money is a problem, try to get a paid keyword analyzer that is offering a free sample, such as Word Tracker. You can upgrade to the paid version once you return profit from the sale of your domain name.

With your keyword chosen, you will need to get a domain name and web hosting. Why do you need web hosting if you’re going to sell just the domain name? It’s because you’re going to need a website to drive traffic to that domain name. Without a website visitors won’t want to return to whatever domain name you selected. This lessens the main element that gives a domain name profitability: traffic.

Anyway, try to get a package that will include both web hosting and a domain name at the same time, since you won’t have to worry about transferring anything later. When you choose your domain name, make sure you include your selected keyword in its phrasing. If you find that your selected keyword is taken as a domain name, try making alterations like saying “a1″, “123″ or “101.” For example, say the keyword “Careers” is taken as a domain name. You could say “A1 Careers,” “Careers 123″ or “Careers 101.” Alternatively, you could try searching for a related keyword that isn’t taken as a domain name. Either way, keep trying until you get a memorable yet keyword-rich domain name that still has a .com extension.

Now, you will need to create a website for your domain name. It doesn’t have to be big… even a one-pager could do the trick, if you don’t mind a website so simple. Write an article related to the keyword you chose and create a simple site using Microsoft Word, (make sure you save the document as an .HTML file). Sign up for Adsense and/or an affiliate program, so you can offer additional resources for your visitors. You will also earn a commission if a sale is made or a clickthrough generated, (depending on the program you joined).

Once your website is uploaded, you need to focus on traffic-building. You can get an initial boost by buying traffic, though make sure the company you buy your traffic from uses expired domain names rather than bots or even incentive traffic, (such as paid emails). But even after this you will need to try to build up inbound links. These are websites that link to you. Post your site on any free site, such as directories, message boards or online classified ads. Also, make sure you submit articles to free article directories. Additionally, try to initiate link exchanges. You can do this by emailing the webmaster or finding link exchange networks such as Link Market.

Keep building up your links until you get a steady stream of traffic. If you get enough traffic, you will get an Alexa rating. If the rating is pleasing, find a domain name appraiser and see how much your domain name can go for. This will give you some idea of how much you can realistically get, but don’t get discouraged if the number seems low. Why? It’s because some people will care more about the traffic your domain name is receiving over the supposed SEO elements of it.

Either way, when you feel you are ready put your domain name up for auction. You may even want to include your original website, though this is optional. When the domain name sells, you will need to transfer it over to the new webmaster’s account… your web hosting company can help you with this.

With your profit you may want to consider doing the venture again with an expired domain name. This will get you a traffic boost without having to go through the actual process of traffic-building, (if you decide you don’t want to do that).
