It seems that people share music and movies, software and audio books as if they were all free. Doing so is, of course, completely illegal.
In general, there are two types of media available. Most e-books contain information on a particular subject with graphics to illustrate important points or just to jazz up the pages. When you are in the grocery store, perhaps you hear a piece of classical music playing in the background. You don’t know the name of the composer or even the name of the song, but you’ve heard this song a million times before. There is a reason for that – the music is public domain.
“Public domain”, by definition is music that can no longer be legally claimed by the composer or artist. In other words, no one gets paid when the music is used. When you hear a song that is not in the public domain, every time the song is played numerous people get paid – the artist singing or performing, the composer, and the publisher. Once a song becomes public domain, no one gets paid. It is free for everyone to use!

If you a student or work in a position where you commonly have to produce presentations, you know how hard it can be to find music to play in the background. Any decent teacher will give you an “F” if you produce a presentation using copyrighted work, and any employer that allowed you to have a recognizable artist’s material playing during your Powerpoint would be foolish.
To use copyrighted material is not only unwise, but it is unethical, and most definitely illegal. Artists, producers, singers, and publishing companies all own the rights to the materials they produce. These rights include, but are not limited to, the score, lyrics, arrangement, and actual sound recording. So, you can’t reprint the lyrics of your favorite song without correct citations and written authorization. You can’t play your favorite singer’s song without paying royalties.
