Let’s go with a few ideas:
* Reprint text and illustrations ‘as is’, in print format, without making any
changes. The simplest way to do this is to obtain a physical version of an
original document, say a report or book, and to scan or photocopy the
information from which to create subsequent copies.
Note that, although this is the fastest and easiest way to recreate and sell
public domain works, it really doesn’t take much effort to make a few simple
changes to text or layout, or illustrations and pagination, for example. These
few changes take very little time but they are highly significant in determining
your rights in the book. This is because with a few changes, enough to make the
item recognisably different from the public domain original, the new work
becomes what’s known as a ‘derivative’ work and its creator is fully protected
under copyright law. This means, if anyone copies your version of the product,
they can be sued for damages.
Note that, if you take a book from the public domain and recreate it as
individual shorter reports, without making changes to the text, your product is
again a derivative and becomes your sole copyright.
* Reprint the text and illustrations ‘as is’ and convert to downloadable
format. This involves laying out the pages as they were in the original format,
by scanning, for example, or by rekeying an exact copy of the document.
Subsequently you turn the document into pdf or other eBook format. Arguably,
this change from print to digital copy is sufficient to make your product a
copyright protected derivative work. But in reality it would be impossible to
know if someone selling an identical digital item to yours has copied your work
or created their own product from scratch just as you did. So at least make a
few changes, design your own front cover, for example, or use a different font,
add a few illustrations, create a contents sheet or index section where none
existed before.
Note that some of the biggest public domain resource sites provide public domain
works as ready to download text. So all you have to do is go to your preferred
location — Gutenberg is most people’s favourite — you’re your title, download
and add the text to a newly opened ‘Word’ document, choose your own font and
size, repaginate the text so that all chapters begin on a new page, and so on.
‘Word’ can be changed into pdf format literally at a keystroke using several
free and low cost software programs on the market today. Find them by searching
google.com for ‘pdf + creator + free’ or similar.
* Recreate the text ‘as is’, in ‘Word’, PDF or similar fashion, and burn your
eBooks on CD. This makes it easier for potential buyers who want your books but
are unfamiliar with downloading or have a slow connection or who simply prefer
physical media. It’s always a good idea to provide as many product formats as
possible and optimise your market potential. You’ll also find that, certainly
on eBay, buyers think they know how to download digital products, but later find
they can’t, so they take out their temper on you and you receive negative
feedback. Sellers of downloadable products can avoid this common scenario by
informing buyers that a CD will follow shortly after they access their download
links.

Choose an image that attracts you with colors, bright or subdued, or even a
striking black and white or sepia-tone photo. Use those colors and shades in
your background, matting and texts to create a harmonized, coordinated look. - Alter vintage images with paint, ink, rubber stamping or other treatments.
“Altered art” is both fun and trendy. Take a basic image and add your own
touches with paint, foil, cutting, folding, stamping, embossing, burning –
pretty much anything. What you add and how you do it can make an image comical,
provocative or nostalgic. When in doubt — it seems — put butterfly wings on a
baby photo. - Let your personal photos “interact” with vintage images. Find a vintage photo or
illustration that fits your theme — perhaps a picture of a seated Santa. Now,

Public domain (PD) content includes any documents that can be used by the public
for any purpose. You can break down public domain material into four different
categories. The first category is general information. This is information
that is widely known such as U.S. state capitals or other facts and figures.
The second category is for works such as films and books that were donated by
their creators to the public domain. This means that the creators did not
copyright the works and made them available for use by the public.
The third type of PD material is works by the government or representatives of
the government. This can include manuals, brochures, special reports, and other
related documents. The fourth and final type of PD material is works that were
copyrighted at one time but have lost their copyright for some reason. This can
include works that were created before 1923 or works created between 1923 and
1963 that have lapsed copyrights that were never renewed. So what does this
mean for you? It means that you can take advantage of this PD material and use
it to generate profits you never thought possible.
Finding Public Domain (PD) Materials
If you’re going to take advantage of PD material, you need to know where to find
it without a lot of frustration. There are several great online resources where
you can literally find millions of pages of free PD material. One of the best
resources available is Project Gutenberg. Project Gutenberg is a compilation of
over 19,000 free e-books, most of which are in the public domain.
These PD e-books can be used in many ways; in fact, Project Gutenberg encourages
the use and distribution of the materials found in their database. The online
catalog is easy to use and allows you to search for e-books by author’s name or
by specific keywords. This makes it convenient and easy for you to find the
e-book you are looking for.
Another great resource for PD works is Alibris. Alibris is an online bookstore
featuring over 60 million books that are used, new, or out-of-print and can be
found at Alibris. Not all of the books at this bookstore are in the PD, so be
careful when you’re looking for public domain works. The easiest way to do this
is to use the Advanced Search feature to search for works published before 1923.
To perform this type of search, click on “Advanced Search” and type “1923″ in
the search box for “publication year.” You can also search for books published
after 1922 and before 1964 to find books from 1923 to 1963 that may be in the
PD. It is important to conduct more in-depth copyright research for these
titles to make sure that these works are indeed in the PD.
Google is also a great resource for works in the public domain. Google has many
features that allow you to search web sites, books, and other works for
information. You can do a search for “public domain books” or “public domain
information” and visit specific web sites that have PD information. You can
also search Google for specific search terms and find information that is in the

Anyone working with public domain materials for any length of time knows that
the U.S. Government is a treasure trove of materials that can be used without
restrictions. Within its web sites (and physical archives) you can find books,
photographs, films, software, demographics databases and much more.
In fact, the vast majority of U.S. Government works have never been granted
copyright protection and become part of the public domain the minute they are
made available. That means that you get access to the very latest materials
whereas with works that were protected by copyright, access to materials is
generally restricted to works that are more than 40 years old.
But like all things, being publicly available does not always mean free.
For instance, certain materials may not be available for download from a
government website in any format and the only way you can access these works is
by purchasing a copy from the appropriate government agency. The fee is in most
instances quite reasonable. But for some specialized databases and annual
subscriptions, the fee can reach thousands of dollars.
But lets be honest… we all like getting things for free. And there is plenty
of government material free for the taking.
The easiest way to seek out specific government works or categories of works is
to know exactly where to go in the huge web of government web sites that exist.
But since they are generally poorly organized and hard to navigate, most people
taking this route find that it ends in frustration and a waste of time.
Fortunately, there is usually a quicker solution.
That solution is Google’s U.S. Government Search at

This portion of Google’s search engine examines only government websites that
it has indexed and can be an enormously powerful way to troll through government

over to Google’s U.S. Government search to find your materials. I think you’ll
be pleasantly surprised by what you can easily find.
A few caveats you need to be aware of:
1) Not all U.S. Government works are copyright free. Some works were produced
by contractors and have copyright protection or partial copyright protection.
In almost all instances, the government will spell out if this is the case. But
if in doubt, just ask them. They will answer you.
2) Google’s U.S. Government search also returns works from state government
entities. I wish it didn’t but it does. This complicates the search results a
bit because state created works are generally protected by copyright. It doesn’t
mean you can’t use them. You would need to seek permission to use those works.
3) Because of the state results, be prepared to scan several pages of results
from your search and to conduct search refinements to exhaustively identify all
the works you have available for your project.
Searching for public domain works is just the first step in building a
profitable income stream. An important first step but still just a first step.

How to Create a Documentary With Public Domain Images and Film Clips
People are fascinated by history documentaries – stories of wars, biographies of
important historical figures, everyday life in well known cities, evolution of
technology and many other aspects of our rich collective history. This
fascination is evident by all the channels on television devoted to this sort of
material including The History Channel, The Military Channel and many others.
And if you watch the documentaries with a critical eye (as opposed to a “be
entertained” eye), you will begin to see how they are developed. You will see
the way they handle scene transitions, working with still images as well as film
clips, how the commentary and the images are weaved together to tell a
compelling story. And if you watch enough of them, you would be able to fully
extract the formula for creating your own documentary.
And thanks to the deluge of public domain film and photographic material that is
now available digitally at no to low cost, acquiring all the pieces for a first
rate documentary can be done on anyone’s budget.
It all starts with an idea for a topic.
From this topic, you would next create an outline of the project. This would be
done with a storyline or storyboard – basically a sketch of the elements of the
documentary and the order in which they would be presented. This storyboard can
be created on paper – as was common in times past – or with software. A search
on your favorite search engine on the phrase “storyboarding software” will
return several packages that can help you with this process. What is nice about
the software is that it is easy to rearrange the story pieces as often as you
wish to make the story line perfect. (When working with paper, this process is
more difficult but can be overcome by working with 3×5 index cards and
rearranging them as needed.)
Once the storyboard is complete, the next step is to write your script. The
length of the script will be determined by the desired length of the documentary
and the speed that the voice talent speaks. If you wish a 60 minute documentary
and the voice talent speaks about 150 words a minute, you will need a script
that is approximately 9,000 words in length.
One additional note about writing the script that needs to be emphasized is to
tone of the reading. You will be handing your script to your voice talent for
him or her to record and that talent will need to know what type of tone to use
throughout the script. Just like a movie script, there need to be markouts in
each section to describe the mood that should be expressed by the voice talent.
If you don’t do this, you will most likely end up with a boring monologue that
will doom your documentary.
Once you have completed the writing of the script and its markouts, it is time
to work with the voice talent to record the script and digitize it for later
importation into your video editing program. At this time, you can review the
audio of the script and make edits, re-record sections that don’t seem to convey
the proper mood, etc.
Now that you know the mechanical requirements of the script, you will link your
script to the storyboard by mapping out the start points in each storyboard
segment with the equivalent start point in the script. What this does is assign
a certain number of words to each storyboard segment (which defines its length.)
This will help you determine the approximate amount of visual material you need
for each segment.
After the storyboard and script are lined up, it is time to gather the visual
materials for each segment and to start laying out everything in your video
editing software. This is the part that requires the biggest time investment as
you will be working to be sure the length of each segment matches the
appropriate ending point for that segment in the audio rendering of the script.
You will also need to ensure that all the transitions of material within each
segment and between segments is smooth. It takes time and patience but the
effort expended here will be the difference between something that is
unwatchable and a stellar documentary. Also, at this time you will probably
discover that you need to replace some of the voice recordings as they may not
convey the exact mood you were looking for as you review the pieces. Just record
those segments again and keep iterating back and forth until you get the
finished product.
Depending on your specific skills and your ready access to the visual materials
and voice talents, you could create your very first documentary in a very short
period of time. It really is a very exciting process and a great way to put your
mark on a fascinating historic event. And who knows, it might even be good
enough to sell to The History Channel.
